The S.S. Badger has a lot of history. The Badger was built in 1952, and its purpose was to be a car ferry. Then the car ferry business stopped running, and people started losing money. The Badger then wasnt running for 18 months. Then for about 5 million dollars then the S.S. Badger was bought by Chuck Conrad. He worked for a long time on the S.S. Badger so it could run again as soon as possible. Then Chuck Conrad made it into a passenger boat. They changed a lot of control rooms into bedrooms, shopes, and cafés. The S.S. Badger was back in business.

The Badger was built in 1952. It cost 5 million dollars. The Badger is an old boat; in fact it is one on the last coal burning steam ships on the Great Lakes. The Badger and its sister have had many owners in their lifetime. The Badger was once a carferry for fright cars to cross the lake instead of going down to Chicago and then up to Wisconsin, but now you can take your car with you as you cross Lake Michigan. Sort of like a mini Cruise Ship.
The Badger has 42 staterooms and 82 berths. The ship holds 620 passengers and 180 automobiles, tour buses, RVs and Semitrucks. With 60 crewmembers the badger runs at 15 knots, which is about 18 miles per hour. It will take about four hours to cross Lake Michigan with the Badger. The Badger is 410 6" in length. The Freight bay is as long as football field but not as wide as one. The badger weights 4,244 gross tons, is 106 9" in height, and 59 6" in width. The Badger uses a telegraph called the Cad Burn telegraph to tell the crew what to do. The badger has two 3,500-hp engines. A total of 7,000-hp.
I cant wait till we go on the SS badger. Ive learned a lot about the badger so far and I hope to learn more later.
The SS Badger was built in 1952 by Christie Corp. of Sturgeon Bay. It was launched September 6, 1952.The Badger was one of three boats made. The Badger, Spartan, and the City of Midland were all train car carriers from Michigan to Wisconsin and back. Trains took the ship so they wouldnt have to go through Chicago. Shortly after that the trains started going the long way because it took less people to drive. The three ships stopped running because no one would pay to take the ships.
Then in 1992 Charles Conrad and his partner Jim Anderson bought all three ships. His goal was to fix up the Badger and get it running again. This time wouldnt be a train car carrier it would be for passengers. After Charles got the Badger running he put Bob Magnilints in charge because Charles got sick. The Badger is still going strong today.
